An autumn river walk in Langley Township: choose a Derby Reach start

For a short Derby Reach walk, the operator lists Edge Trail as two kilometres return, about 40 minutes on flat ground. It is pedestrian only. Houston is a four-kilometre woodland walk with steep sections, while Fort Langley and back is a 12-kilometre outing. Choose the route before choosing your entrance.

A route that fits the afternoon

A short walk becomes much easier to plan when the map gives you a real scale. Edge Trail’s two-kilometre return is a small outing beside giant cottonwoods. Houston’s four-kilometre return takes you into mixed forest, with slopes that reach 23 per cent. They ask different things of your legs. Pick the gentler option if the group wants plenty of stops rather than a workout.

The brochure also gives Edge Farm Trail as 3.2 kilometres return, with one gentle hill and river views. That is a useful middle choice between a brief stroll and a long village connection. Allow extra time at the Heritage Area if you want to read the exhibits. A route’s listed walking time does not include every photograph, snack or conversation.

Derby Reach also has a story beyond its scenery. The original Fort Langley stood here from 1827 before moving to the present fort site in 1839. The Heritage Area has a cairn and exhibits about that earlier place. It gives a family something specific to look for without turning a quiet walk into a full-day history trip.

Decide whether you want river views or a forest loop

The May 2023 discussion praised Fort-to-Fort for river views and Houston for a more wooded, rolling walk. That distinction is useful in autumn: a visitor wanting a gentle riverside outing should not follow a forest-loop pin by mistake.

Use Metro Vancouver’s current park map and notices to choose an entrance. Treat river views as the goal, rather than a fixed distance. If rain has made the route muddy or a gate is closed, shorten the outing. A return walk lets you turn back without needing a second parking place.

Choose a distance from the current map

The February 2026 visitor brochure gives these route choices. Houston is a hillier outing than the river’s Edge Trail. The walk to Fort Langley and back is 12 kilometres and about four hours, so save it for a day when you want that distance.

Why the same names keep coming up

A May 2025 newcomer thread again named Derby Reach, Houston, Fort-to-Fort and Campbell Valley. That echoes the older beginner-hike discussion. Replies also offered neighbourhood paths and destinations much farther away. The useful pattern is that local walking can begin close to home; you do not have to turn every outing into a mountain hike.

The November 2022 scenery thread adds two cautions. One person remembered mosquitoes at Derby Reach, while another reminded Campbell Valley visitors to watch their footing near horse trails. Those are dated experiences, not an October forecast. The same thread suggested feeding birds at Campbell Valley, but the park’s current wildlife rules say not to feed them. Enjoy what you see without bringing food for wildlife.
